MB8D Installation Guide

Follow this step-by-step guide to install the MB8D woofer correctly, from selecting the right enclosure to final break-in. Proper installation unlocks the full 300W capability of the MB8D.

Installing the MB8D correctly is critical to achieving the sound quality and reliability this driver is engineered for. This guide covers every stage: enclosure selection, mounting, wiring, amplifier configuration and the essential break-in period.

Step 1 – Choose the Right Enclosure

The MB8D performs optimally in a sealed enclosure of 12–18 litres (0.42–0.63 cubic feet) for tight, accurate bass. For extended low-frequency output, a ported enclosure of 20–28 litres tuned to 38–42 Hz maximises SPL. Avoid excessively small boxes which elevate the resonant frequency and reduce excursion headroom.

Step 2 – Cut the Mounting Hole

The MB8D requires a 178 mm (7 inches) cutout diameter. Use a jigsaw or hole saw with a template. Ensure the surrounding panel is at least 18 mm thick MDF for adequate baffle stiffness. Seal the baffle with acoustic putty tape before dropping the driver in.

Step 3 – Wire the MB8D

The MB8D is a 2-ohm driver. Use 12 AWG OFC speaker cable for runs up to 3 metres, and 10 AWG for longer runs. Connect positive (red terminal) to amplifier positive and negative (black terminal) to amplifier negative. Confirm polarity by briefly touching a 1.5V battery: the cone should move outward on the positive stroke.

Step 4 – Set the Amplifier Crossover

Configure your amplifier low-pass crossover at 80–100 Hz (12 dB/octave or 24 dB/octave Linkwitz-Riley). Set the subsonic filter at 30 Hz to protect the MB8D from infrasonic frequencies. Begin with the gain control at 50% and adjust upward while monitoring for distortion or mechanical noise.

Step 5 – Break In the MB8D

New MB8D drivers benefit from a 20-hour break-in period. Play music at 50% maximum volume for the first 20 hours. The suspension components soften and the driver reaches its published parameters. After break-in, fine-tune the crossover point and gain to taste.
